Are Blue-Coated Lenses Worth It?

What is blue light?

Blue-violet light is a part of the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, occupying the space between 380 and 500nm. and represents an essential part of the spectrum that is relevant to high-contrast vision along with various physiological processes. Today it is most closely associated with its interaction with the saccadic rhythm, and digital eye strain.

In simple terms, there are two different types of blue light: the natural blue light of the sun, and artificial blue light e.g. emitted by energy-saving lights as well as smartphone and computer displays. Besides facing potentially harmful blue light emitted by the sun, most consumers are increasingly exposed to artificial blue light. Studies also indicate that the use of digital technology significantly slows the rate at which your eyes blink, which exacerbates the dry eye symptoms that digital eye strain can cause.
Accelerated by the global COVID-19 pandemic, the use of digital devices is high, especially indoors, when digital displays or light-emitting diodes (LED) are the main sources of illumination – however with the UK Government’s commitment to sustainable energy, many street lights are already being swapped out for more energy efficient but high-energy LED lights. This means that already ubiquitous high-energy blue light will become even more prevalent in our day to day lives in the future.

While it cannot be stated to be harmful per se, studies do indicate that the relatively high levels of energy inherent in the comparatively short wavelengths of blue light have been shown to impact metabolic processes in retinal cells. Nevertheless, the increasing use of digital devices and the growing amount of time spent at home means that complaints of decreased visual comfort, asthenopic symptoms such as blurred vision, burning, painful or tired eyes, and eyestrain are common and familiar topics to our team here at MojoGlasses. If you find yourself blinking a lot more than usual, straining your eyes, or a dry prickly feeling in your eyes after a day looking at screens or in a brightly lit environment, it’s highly likely you are suffering from digital eye strain.

The good news is that our team is able to offer a solution: a lens that blocks a part of blue light and at the same time provides fewer irritating reflections on the lens surface and increases its scratch resistance due to the anti-reflection stack and scratch resistant layer built into the coatings formula.

How does the blue anti reflection coating work?

Blue anti-reflection coatings are designed for our “new normal” world that has resulted in spending more time exposed to artificial light sources that emit a relatively high intensity of blue light. They block a significant part of blue light in the wavelength range from 400 to 455 nm, while providing UV protection for general use in bright and sunny environments. Blue light blocking coatings are designed to block blue light by targeted reflection, with the chemical properties and thickness of the layer specifically formulated to reflect that specific portion of the visual spectrum, while allowing other visible wavelengths to transmit through the lens unhindered.

This premium anti-reflection coating with its subtle blue residual reflection ensures the wearer does not get annoyed by irritating reflections and the eyes are clearly visible behind the lenses. It’s functional, and it’s a much nicer aesthetic finish for our customers.

Are blue light lenses right for me?

Blue anti-reflection coatings are suitable for all ages and available in a wide range of lens designs and in all plastic lens materials. They provide a comfortable all-day solution for all people frequently exposed to blue light from digital devices or interior lighting – as well as for anyone who already experiences symptoms of digital eye strain.
